What Does AMRAP Mean? A Guide to AMRAP Workouts

If you have ever searched for different fitness content, you might have come across the term AMRAP. Whether it’s a home workout video, a CrossFit class, or a strength training program, AMRAP has gained popularity in modern fitness. However, if you are wondering:

  • What is AMRAP?

  • What does AMRAP stand for?

  • What is AMRAP workout?

Then, you are on the right page. AMRAP workouts are often adapted because they are simple and highly efficient. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned athlete, AMRAP workouts are ideal for promoting training consistency and general fitness levels. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to work, why the AMRAP workout is ever so popular, the benefits, and what to avoid when it comes to the AMRAP workout.

What Does AMRAP Mean?

The full form of AMRAP is: As Many Rounds As Possible. However, in some training programs, it also stands for As Many Repetitions As Possible. Both AMRAP meanings and full forms are correct, but the definition depends on the structure of the workout.

Generally, when you perform a series of exercises in a circuit, AMRAP refers to “As Many Rounds As Possible”, or in simple words, you perform an entire sequence of exercises 1 to 4 (or maybe more) times as you can during the specified time period.

For example:

  • 10 Push-ups

  • 15 Air Squats

  • 20 Sit-ups

You can use a stopwatch to set a timer for 15 minutes and repeat this series throughout. If you complete 6 full rounds and make 10 push-ups in round 7 before 15 minutes run out, your score is 6 rounds + 10 reps.

As you can see, AMRAP generally refers to As Many Rounds As Possible. If you had instructions to do 1 AMRAP of Bench Press for your AMRAP set using 70% of your one-rep max, it means as many high-quality bench press reps as possible before reaching muscular fatigue. However, no matter how AMRAP is used, the core of AMRAP and all iterations is trying to make you perform better under set parameters and conditions, and under the condition that you use proper form.

How an AMRAP Workout Actually Works

Unlike other workout formats that define specific sets and rest periods, AMRAP workouts center around a timer. After time is started on the timer, it’s a full, stop-on-the-minute workout at prescribed movements until time is called out by whoever is in the gym. A standard AMRAP is broken down to just these four steps.

1. Set a time domain (10 min, 15 min, or 20 min).

2. Pick some movements.

3. Execute them in order.

4. Repeat until the timer ends.

Here's a simple 12-minute AMRAP:

  • 10 Squats

  • 8 Push-ups

  • 12 Walking Lunges

  • 20 Mountain Climbers

This does not mean that you run through the workout at all costs as recklessly as possible. You should be maintaining a sustained speed that permits continuous going on at good technique. Your final score reflects the total amount of work completed, making it easy to track progress over time. One of the nice aspects of AMRAP workouts is that each one has built-in scaling for the workout not to get too easy or too difficult, depending on whether a beginner ends up at 3 rounds or an elite at 6 or 7 rounds; within time and effort scale to achieve the same benefit.

Benefits of AMRAP Workouts

One of the main benefits of an AMRAP workout is that you work on several components of your fitness at the same time.

Improves Cardiovascular Endurance

You keep your heart at a high rate for the entire session because there are no breaks or planned rest. After a while, it benefits your cardiovascular workout by building up stamina.

Builds Muscular Endurance

Performing sets of exercise for a few rounds puts your muscles under fatigue and helps you build up your stamina and resistance training capability for further activities.

Burns More Calories

Because you are working more continuously with an AMRAP workout, more calories are overall burned.

Saves Time

You can design a decent 15-minute AMRAP, and it will keep you working at 100% for a significant period of time. If you work out at home, you have an easier task doing countless AMRAP workouts with a Rubber Hex Dumbbells Sets.

Develops Mental Toughness

As fatigue starts to kick, technique becomes even more crucial than raw power. AMRAP workouts force both the body and the mind to continue working, building resilience and discipline.

Different Types of AMRAP Workouts

  • Bodyweight AMRAP

If you want to exercise at home with your own bodyweight, then AMRAP at body weight includes training exercises push ups, lunges, squats, burpees, planks and mountain climbers.

  • Strength-Based AMRAP

These will include things like a Romanian deadlift, squat, bench press, overhead press, etc. Focus on a controlled lifting. When first creating a home gym, people usually opt for 5-50 rubber hex dumbbells sets with rack as this offers plenty of weights to cover the vast majority of intermediate and beginner AMRAP workout programs.

  • Cardio AMRAP

Exercise that prioritizes cardio could include the rowing machine, cycling, running, skipping rope, box jumping, or doing high knees.

  • CrossFit AMRAP

A mix of strength, gymnastics and conditioning movements are linked together for an AMRAP in a tough CrossFit workout. For example, a CrossFit AMRAP might include pull ups, kettle bell swings, wall balls, burpees, and rowing – all to be tested together!

  • Dumbbell AMRAP

With so many possible combinations, dumbbells can be a perfect tool for training all upper and lower body muscle groups. Thrusters, lunges, renegade rows, shoulder presses, and dumbbell snatches are just some popular options. Get ready to move more: presses, lunges, rows, and more as you get stronger. With our 5-75 rubber hex dumbbell set with rack, you will easily incorporate progressive overload into your training.

Conclusion

AMRAP (As Many Reps or Rounds As Possible) workouts are incredibly efficient and allow you to maximize fitness in a short amount of time. Begin at your level, respect proper form and build over time. If you want to perform with dumbbells, you can contact True Iron Fitness.
